Food Police, Shame, and Diabetes. What if we stopped shaming people for how they manage their diabetes? It seems like everyone is worried about my diabetes. But why? What’s the big deal? Lots of people with diabetes feel like they’re under a microscope. But why should we have to explain ourselves? There’s a lot of debate around what the “right” way to manage diabetes is, but at the end of the day, it’s up to each individual to find what works best for them. My guest Mila Clarke drops some knowledge on the misconceptions, guilt and shame that comes with living with diabetes, especially as an influencer. It’s clear that we need to stop judging and shaming each other, and start supporting one another instead. Do you feel like everyone is always watching how you live your life with diabetes?

How do we fight type 2 stigma?

There is a stigma attached to type 2 diabetes.

A stigma of shame. A guilt and embarrassment. It can make us feel like we’re broken or defective in some way. We might even start blaming ourselves for our circumstances…or worse yet think that it’s our fault that other people are so unkind to us.

The truth is: there are many reasons why type 2 diabetes has become stigmatized-and fighting back isn’t easy. I chat with Dex Geralds to get his take on changing the narrative about those living with type 2 diabetes.

How do we put ourselves first when living with a chronic illness?

What if you are living with a chronic illness and it’s making everything else in your life difficult? How can we put ourselves first when there is so much to do, such as taking care of our families, going to school or work? In this episode, I chat with health coach and fellow podcaster Lissie Poyner who has diabetes and Crohn’s. She shares her journey of balancing the demands on her time and how she learned that putting herself first was not selfish but necessary for her health. She now coaches others living with diabetes on how to do the same.

Become a Blood Sugar Boss with Dione

Life with diabetes can be overwhelming. Sometime it feels like you have no control over your body. Add to that everyone has an opinion on how you should manage it. Especially when it comes to what you eat. As someone who grew up with southern cooking AND Thai cooking, the idea of letting go of my cultural favorites is heartbreaking. Many people across the world experience the same. But what if there is a way to enjoy your cultural foods and still manage your blood sugar? That’s where Dione comes in. As someone who has lived with pre-diabetes previously and is a registered dietician, she asked herself, “there has to be a better way right?” I sit down with Dione to learn how she’s helping so many people become Blood Sugar Bosses and you can be too! KEY POINTS
  • Becoming a dietician
  • Debunking the carb myth
  • The Blood Sugar Boss Coaching program
