How to stay motivated when treating your diabetes

If you’re someone living with diabetes you understand that motivation can be fleeting. Sometimes we want to take a day off from diabetes. It’s not something that we can do. This can lead to burnout quickly if we don’t have things in place to keep us on track as best as we can.

So today I want to touch on ways that I’ve stayed motivated while also showing myself self compassion on days when it’s hard.

KEY POINTS

  • Have a support system
  • Self care even if it’s laying in the bed all day
  • Be flexible and willing to adapt

Join the community! The Diabetes App with Co-Founder & COO Taylor Companion

One thing that has been a key for me in managing my diabetes in a way that’s best for me, is engaging with other diabetics. When I first started Healing In Hindsight I couldn’t find anyone. But now that’s all changed. The Diabetic community has made itself known.

Apps like The Diabetes App has made it even easier to connect with others and learn from a. community of your peers. I never knew about going to an endocrinologist or getting a CGM until I started interacting with other diabetics. I’ve learned so much in the past year alone and you can join too! I sit down with co-founder and COO Taylor to learn more about why they created this space just for us.

KEY POINTS

  • Creating the app
  • Growing the community

4 diabetes beliefs that work against you

Negative thoughts and beliefs can impact your diabetes treatment 🤯

How you administer it. How you make choices. Even how you view diabetes. Often times these 4 common beliefs come from outside sources. When these thoughts run rampant they can cause extreme damage.

In this weeks Hindsight thoughts podcast episode, I talk about how you can adjust negative beliefs to positive ones that don’t cause extreme changes or sacrifice. I personally have experienced these particular 4. I’ve seen how they’ve hurt me and others in the community.

My hope is that you’ll be able to combat these beliefs that have nothing to do with yourself, diagnosis, or treatment.

KEY POINTS

  • FALSE: Being a diabetic means that you can’t enjoy things.
  • FALSE: Losing weight is the answer to everything.
  • FALSE: Being on medication is a bad thing.
  • FALSE: You caused your diabetes.

Today’s episode is all about the season finale. I sit down with my good friends and mentors Krista and Lindsey of the Almost 30 podcast to talk about their spiritual paths, body acceptance, and the power of discipline. It was a wild cocktail of vulnerability and truth-telling — no holds barred.

I wanted to bring things together in this final episode. I felt that Krista and Lindsey were perfect examples of constant evolution. Even though there are many people that will never truly understand the battles of diabetes, we’re still reminded that being human is a journey of constant change and no one has it down perfectly. So don’t give up. Strive to be the best you possible. Don’t let diabetes make you think that you can’t.

KEY POINTS

  • The journey to discovering yourself
  • The relationship we have with our bodies
  • Appreciating discipline and the power it gives

Changing the world of Endocrinology with Dr. Gregory Dodell

Fun fact: I had no idea that diabetes management was best done with an Endocrinologist. This year is the first time I’ve seen one. So it’s only right that I bring one onto the pod! Dr. Gregory Dodell is a New York based Endocrinologist but to me he’s special. He believes in treating behaviors and not leading with typical weight stigmas that are often assumed for diabetics. We have an awesome chat about changing the way doctor’s treat diabetic patients and much more.

KEY POINTS

  • The inspiration to Pursue Medicine & Endocrinology
  • Following Health At every Size (HAES) philosophy
  • Using IG as a way to change the world of endocrinology

How to balance between following doctor’s orders and listening to your body

Let’s talk about the balance between following doctor’s orders and listening to your body.

As you can imagine, having an invisible disability has taught me the balance between following doctor’s orders and listening to my body. When you’re first diagnosed with a chronic illness, you feel hopeless and helpless because you don’t have any way of knowing if it will ever go away or not. Sometimes doctors tell us one thing but our bodies tell us another so we need to learn how to listen for ourselves in order to find the best path for our healing process.

KEY POINTS

  •  Doctors are experts in their field, but they don’t know your body as well as you do
  • If you have any questions about what you’re doing or why ask your doctor before making decisions
  • Get a second opinion if you’re not sure
