My art teachers were onto something when they said to take a step back and look at the bigger picture. It's the same with life, especially when it comes to managing diabetes. We tend to focus on the details and it's easy to get lost in them.

This has been literally months in the making but I’m a cover girl now but make it diabetes. From the photoshoot to the interview to patiently waiting to see it all come together, nothing can truly describe how I feel.

Never thought that this would be how I would show up in the world. Even so I’m proud as hell. Although my spicy brain is trying to down play this and say it’s nothing special because there’s so much more I could be doing, I’m not allowing that voice space today.

I deserve to be happy about this moment.

Living with diabetes isn’t something I take lightly. It’s not something to joke about or make light of. It’s a serious condition that requires constant management, and I’m proud to be an advocate for the diabetes community.

It’s the misinformation about diabetes from people who don’t live with it that makes the jokes not funny at all. Not everyone has the same type of diabetes, and not everyone experiences the same symptoms or treatments. It’s important to educate yourself before making assumptions.

I’m thankful for the advancements in technology that help make diabetes management easier and more accurate. With the help of my doctor and diabetes care team, I’m able to make the best choices to ensure I’m living my healthiest life.

PSA: You can have your cultural foods!!

As a nation of immigrants it’s frustrating and disappointing when doctors, nutritionist, and dieticians tell you that the foods you’ve known from your home country or parents home country are out of reach when you have diabetes. For many POC this is problematic.
⠀
Many foods from other lands are healthy if not more than the standard western diet. Medical professionals should be learning about the foods their patients know and love so they can work with them not against them.

Our cultural foods aren’t the problem. Period.

Everyone has something to say about what people with #diabetes should eat 😒

New diet trends bombard our feeds regularly. If there’s anything I’ve learned in the 6 years I’ve lived with type 2, it’s that the way you eat is just as unique as you are. Cookie cutter nutrition doesn’t work anymore. Your environment is completely different from mine. What you have access to might not be available to me.

In my latest article for @healthgrades I share key things I’ve learned about the realities of eating with type 2 diabetes.

There are reasons why Black women are hesitant with the healthcare system.

The biggest reason, in my opinion, is because it can be hard to find someone who listens to us. For many Black women with diabetes like myself, there's deep distrust, anxiety, and fear. We often have to fight to get what we need. Despite this, I’ve learned to fight back and take charge. I share some key advice based on my experiences in my first article for @healthgrades because it’s important for all Black women to know that diabetes or not, we have the power. Meeting other women living with #diabetes isn’t as complicated as we thought!

It’s all thanks to @diabetessisters.
⠀
They’re a national nonprofit serving women age 18+ who live with any type of diabetes.
⠀
Their mission? To improve health & quality of life for women with diabetes, and advocate on their behalf.
⠀
When I was first diagnosed I had no idea who to turn to. Finally after countless google scrolling I stumbled upon their website diabetessisters.org.
⠀
I was amazed at the level of support and resources that they have available online. I spent 2 years flailing around on my own but I was so happy to find them.
⠀
They even have peer support meetings both online and in person where you can ask questions, share your experiences, and hopefully make some friends!

How you talk to yourself matters right?

I’ve been thinking through a lot when it comes to my body. Diabetes is for sure stressful and complicated.
⠀
I thought about all the times I would get upset about my blood sugar spiking. All the meds and shots.
⠀
I remember moments where even if it was in my head I would wish for a different body. I would curse at it.
⠀
“Ugh why TF are you so complicated?!”
“I can’t eat anything!”
“Great diabetes has validated how medically fat I am. Fuck this useless body!”
⠀
I know I can’t speak diabetes away. But what if how I speak to myself for my mental health is the same principle for my physical health?
⠀
What if we said “thank you body for waking up today” instead of assuming our bodies SHOULD just function?
⠀
How can I trust my body if I do nothing to build confidence that with the right tools WILL operate for OUR success?
⠀
Just a thought I had.

Sometimes it's about changing the setting.

I’ve been digging deep about how I wanna move forward with the show. I’m getting validation that I’m doing the right thing but not in the places where the world says it matters.

I’m battling invisible competition. Getting audits to figure out where I’m going “wrong”. joining this membership and that masterclass and it feels like I’m throwing money at things but answers are coming up short.

How do I find joy in this?

And the truth I came to for myself, is that I felt so trapped in what people wanted to hear about life with diabetes. Things that honestly I don’t wanna talk about 😅

Living with diabetes is truly a lifestyle. It’s more than blood sugar numbers and carb counting.

It’s been quiet around here I know..

A lot has happened in the past 2 months tha has been an ultimate test of my resiliency as well as huge sign that I needed to shift things. And sometimes that has to be done in private.

Despite all of this, time moves on. This past weekend I celebrated my 32nd birthday or what I like to call 30 2.0

I am so humbled and blessed with the bonds that I have. Thank you to everyone for the kind messages, for sharing your time, and for simply allowing me to stay bonded to you in our unique ways.

I'll be honest my birthday spirits were a little low this year. 2022 is already showing out. But all of you have reminded me how amazing it is to have people in my life who care so much.

With tears in my eyes and a heart overflowing with gratitude, thank you so much.

I’ll share more soon but needed to share how thankful I am to be here.

Nov 19th made 6 years living with diabetes. ⠀

In the past year I started my own company and this show. Worked for myself for 6 months. Got a new job because of my show as well as some help. But even with all that I was hitting a wall. So things got behind. ⠀
⠀
Lately I've felt lost. Unbalanced. Unmotivated. Completely exhausted. I felt disconnected. I ended up sick for almost 2 weeks. I even lost my voice. ⠀
⠀
It was in this moment that I had time to myself to Rest, reconnect, and realize my limits as well as what i wanted. ⠀
⠀
there's a lot coming. Changes for the better. Deeper conversations and so much more. I feel renewed and I thank you for your patience. ⠀
