Building a Type 2 Community with T’ara of Beyond type 2

With type 2 diabetes being so stigmatized, it can be difficult to find other people to connect with. The main reason why I started this show and my company is because I saw a gap in representation and community for those living with type 2 diabetes. Being diagnosed with it often comes with a lot of guilt and shame. It makes it hard for people to be open about their condition and share their experiences to others.

That’s where the Beyond Type 2 community comes it. It is a safe space to share your stories, tips, or anything else you can think of with those that understand to a degree what you’re going through. I sit down with Beyond Type 2’s Senior Community Manager T’ara to talk more about how it came to be.

Life with diabetes can be overwhelming. Sometime it feels like you have no control over your body. Add to that everyone has an opinion on how you should manage it. Many people across the world experience the same. But what if there is a way to enjoy your cultural foods and still manage your blood sugar? That’s where Dione comes in. As someone who has lived with pre-diabetes previously and is a registered dietician, she asked herself, “there has to be a better way right?” I sit down with Dione to learn how she’s helping so many people become Blood Sugar Bosses and you can be too! 3 tips that help me stay in range with my CGM

A common phrase that comes up in the CGM world is “time in range”.  As someone who has been using a CGM for less than a year, it quickly became a number that is almost more important than my quarterly A1C. On today’s episode, I share 3 tips that have helped me stay in range as long as possible. ** As always this show is for general information and is based on my personal experience. Blood sugar friendly oatmeal with Co-Founder of Oat of Ordinary Chara

Oatmeal is one of my favorite things to eat for breakfast. Fun fact: I used to be allergic to oats when I was little. But I learned that I had outgrown my allergy when my cousin told me to try strawberries and cream oatmeal. I fell in love. Did I mention, I thought I was allergic to oatmeal? So I ate all kinds of oat cereals not realizing that I had outgrown my allergy for quite some time

When I was diagnosed, all cereals, porridges, grits, and of course, oatmeal seemed to be completely out of reach. There are too many carbs. If it’s got fruit it’s too much sugar. Instant oatmeal didn’t keep me full unless I was eating 2 packets at a time. It was a vicious cycle. It was almost like I had to pretend I was allergic to it all over again.

But co-founders and friends Vanessa and Chara have different plans. They created Oat of the Ordinary to provide a healthy nutritious breakfast without the blood sugar spikes or crashes. with 11 grams of protein and only 3-4 grams of sugar, they’ve created easy-to-go oatmeal that’s good for anyone including those living with diabetes like me.
