Binge eating and the fear of low blood sugar

When my blood sugar drops I have a really hard time controlling my eating.

For many living with diabetes this is common. Some of us, myself included, will also over eat to try to prevent low blood sugar later on.

I talk about how low blood sugar can trigger me to binge eat- even though I’m not actually hungry. It’s been helpful for me to understand that feeling low blood sugar is just as much of an emotional experience as it is physical. I share insights on how the fear of low blood sugar affects the diabetes community thanks to my friends at dQ&A.

Low blood sugar can be scary but if we take half a second to slow down while we’re treating we can prevent over eating.

How to stay motivated when treating your diabetes

If you’re someone living with diabetes you understand that motivation can be fleeting. Sometimes we want to take a day off from diabetes. It’s not something that we can do. This can lead to burnout quickly if we don’t have things in place to keep us on track as best as we can.

So today I want to touch on ways that I’ve stayed motivated while also showing myself self compassion on days when it’s hard.

KEY POINTS

  • Have a support system
  • Self care even if it’s laying in the bed all day
  • Be flexible and willing to adapt

4 diabetes beliefs that work against you

Negative thoughts and beliefs can impact your diabetes treatment 🤯

How you administer it. How you make choices. Even how you view diabetes. Often times these 4 common beliefs come from outside sources. When these thoughts run rampant they can cause extreme damage.

In this weeks Hindsight thoughts podcast episode, I talk about how you can adjust negative beliefs to positive ones that don’t cause extreme changes or sacrifice. I personally have experienced these particular 4. I’ve seen how they’ve hurt me and others in the community.

My hope is that you’ll be able to combat these beliefs that have nothing to do with yourself, diagnosis, or treatment.

How to balance between following doctor’s orders and listening to your body

Let’s talk about the balance between following doctor’s orders and listening to your body.

As you can imagine, having an invisible disability has taught me the balance between following doctor’s orders and listening to my body. When you’re first diagnosed with a chronic illness, you feel hopeless and helpless because you don’t have any way of knowing if it will ever go away or not. Sometimes doctors tell us one thing but our bodies tell us another so we need to learn how to listen for ourselves in order to find the best path for our healing process.

KEY POINTS

  •  Doctors are experts in their field, but they don’t know your body as well as you do
  • If you have any questions about what you’re doing or why ask your doctor before making decisions
  • Get a second opinion if you’re not sure

How to accept yourself

I’m sick of living a life that other people have told me I should live. Today I want to talk about self-acceptance, but not just your physical appearance or how much money you make – it’s more than that. It’s accepting yourself as a person in general because we’re all unique individuals with our own quirks and qualities that nobody can replace. The first step to self-acceptance is recognizing that you deserve it. But how do we deal with the negative thoughts in our head that tell us otherwise? I’ve been there too. It’s a battle of mind over matter when it comes to accepting yourself for who you are. I want you all to know that you deserve love from others and most importantly love for yourselves so please take a few minutes out of your day just for YOURSELF!

KEY POINTS

  • Accepting yourself is an ongoing process with no end date
  • You’re not perfect and that’s okay- don’t try to be someone you’re not
  • It’s okay if you don’t like everything about your life or yourself right now- all that will change with time and practice
